Types of lenses and their uses

Photographers are generally told that their talent and proficiency in the field matter much more than the equipment they use. That does mirror the reality to a certain extent, but that rule is not set in stone. If you are talented and dedicated to your profession, you could pick up some camera that is used only by sticks in the mud and capture scintillating photos. With those photos, you could bewitch the viewers with your skillset and make a living by posting your images online. But such endeavours don’t last long and somewhere along the road, you will be required to make an investment in sophisticated equipment if you want to move your career forward.

The old kit lens that once accompanied your camera might suffice if you’re going to be an amateur photographer. But if you want to break boundaries and move higher upper the ladder, you need to take up more daunting challenges that demand a better set of camera lenses. So, if you are looking to expand on your experience or if you are just looking for some tips to get better at the specific niche that you are fond of, these tips will surely help you.

Telephoto lenses: These generally possess long focal lengths which start at 85mm. The permit you to photograph subjects from a significant distance owing to their excellent magnification abilities. On the other hand, they are much heavier and larger when contrasted with different lens types, and require you to use miscellaneous accessories like tripods or monopods.

Also, it’s customary to note that the depth of field is inversely proportional to the focal length and as a direct concomitant to this relationship, these lenses typically produce very narrow focal planes. This in-turn props up the utility of short telephoto lenses(which range from 85mm to 135mm) when portrait photography is considered since the background appears obscure and fuzzy. When other kinds of photography are taken within our purview, it can be noted that these lenses offer the convenience to capture close up shots from a significant distance. Therefore, these lenses lend to photography ventures in the domains of wildlife and sports.

Standard lenses: These lenses have a focal length that is somewhere in the mid-range, not brushing either extreme. The most significant advantage of this type of lens is its lack of artificiality and the natural aesthetic appeal that it proffers to the viewer. It closely resembles what the human eye sees and provides a very accurate perspective to the viewers.

These are also called “normal lenses”, and their organic viewpoints prove to be invaluable when they are employed in documentary projects like street, travel photography and portrait. Even when we take this in isolation and break the shackles of genre-restrictions, it can still be considered an indispensable part of every photographer’s equipment. It’s a weapon that proves its worth whenever an unexpected need arises.

Wide-angle lenses: These lenses have very short focal lengths which typically lie within the confines of 14 to 35mm. The broader viewpoints allow the photographer to capture much more of the scene in just a single exposure. They are hence liberally employed in the fields of architecture and landscape photography.

These lenses also have a remarkable ability to create more considerable depths in the field of vision. Sometimes scenes can be razor-sharp. In such challenging situations, the photographer can capture stunning shots, that don’t look contrived, with the help of the wide-angle lenses. This doesn’t come without its own set of pitfalls. With short focal lengths, the distortions in the photos can be rendered conspicuous.
